You may or may not have noticed a lack of updates on the site or any of our socials.  The intention for Benevents was to do more than one event a year and unfortunately that wasn’t happening.  A lot of things came up in my (Rachel) personal life; the main thing being the passing of my grandfather at the start of January.

My Zaidy and I in the ’80’s

I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some things about him.  Please bare with me, but this is relevant and I do have a point.  My grandfather, or Zaidy as we called him, grew up incredibly poor.  His family didn’t have much.  I won’t get into all of it, but in short, he was the first member of his family to attend university, which he worked summers in tobacco fields to pay for.  He lived a life I would probably be unable to grasp because thanks to him (and in turn my parents) I didn’t struggle financially for the things I have.  However, I took one major lesson from my Zaidy.  When he finally became a man of good fortune he made it a point to help those less fortunate than himself, even going as far as to offer people jobs that he created in the moment for them.  When he saw someone in need, he did whatever he could to help them.  He was a lawyer for most of his working life, but he was also a REALLY decent human being. After his passing I had a lot of time to reflect on my own life and while I certainly do not have the means to help people in the many ways that he did, I felt a strong need to keep Benevents going as my small way to raise money for charities that I strongly believe in.  I wanted to continue doing good things for those who need it, almost as a tribute to my Zaidy.  Then life got in the way and I feel like I somewhat let him down.

16That being said, I have decided to revive Benevents to whatever capacity I can.  This October, the Halloween haunt will be back in full force and we will be collecting donations again for SickKids Foundation.  There will be more info posted on this site in the coming weeks. I have also decided to start updating the blog on a regular basis with info about other charitable events happening around the GTA.  If you run one or happen to know of one, feel free to contact us through the contact form on this site with all the details.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this post.  And as always, if you can’t make it to any of our events, you can always donate online by clicking the blue button at the top of the page (this takes you to a secure link run by SickKids). Thanks, Rachel Brown
